Mr. Shapiro served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital for Special Surgery ( HSS ), a leading academic medical center focused on musculoskeletal health, from 2006 until his retirement in 2023. Prior to joining HSS, Mr. Shapiro worked at Geisinger Health System from 2002 to 2006, serving in roles with increasing leadership scope and ultimately advancing to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Clinical Enterprise. From 1999 to 2002, he served as a senior healthcare expert and consultant at McKinsey & Co. Prior to McKinsey, he held positions in other hospitals and health systems from 1983 through 1999. Since October 2023, Mr. Shapiro has served as a Senior Advisor to General Atlantic, a private equity firm, and on the board of certain of their healthcare focused portfolio companies. Additionally, Mr. Shapiro serves in numerous advisory capacities and board positions at other privately held organizations. He is currently a director of Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc.
