With over 30 years of experience in drug discovery and development, particularly in addiction biology and neuroscience, Heidbreder earned his doctorate in neuropharmacology from the University of Ancona, Italy, followed by postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States. His early career included pivotal roles at major pharmaceutical firms, such as Vice President of Neuroscience Discovery Research at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where he led multidisciplinary teams in advancing therapies for substance use disorders, including alcohol dependence and cocaine addiction. Heidbreder's achievements are marked by more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, numerous patents, and contributions to several investigational new drugs (INDs) that progressed to clinical stages. At GSK, he spearheaded translational research programs that bridged preclinical models to human trials, earning recognition for innovative approaches in biomarkers and neuroimaging for addiction. In 2017, he joined Indivior as Senior Vice President and Head of Non-Clinical Development, rapidly ascending to CSO in 2020, where he oversees the company's robust R&D pipeline. As CSO, Heidbreder drives Indivior's scientific strategy, focusing on novel formulations and mechanisms for opioid dependence treatment, such as the investigational opioid vaccine and next-generation buprenorphine products. His leadership has accelerated pipeline advancements, including the FDA-approved SUBLOCADE and INTRONY, while fostering collaborations with academic institutions and biotech partners to tackle unmet needs in addiction medicine. Under his guidance, Indivior continues to pioneer evidence-based innovations that improve patient outcomes and reduce societal burdens of substance misuse.
