Sanjay S. Shukla, M.D., M.S., is the President and Chief Executive Officer of aTyr Pharma Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing first-in-class medicines for severe inflammatory diseases, particularly interstitial lung diseases. A board-certified internist with over two decades of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, Dr. Shukla earned his M.D. from Northeast Ohio Medical University and his M.S. in Health Care Leadership from Brown University. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he honed his clinical expertise before transitioning into leadership roles in biotech and pharmaceuticals. Prior to joining aTyr Pharma in 2021, Dr. Shukla served as Chief Executive Officer of Chinook Therapeutics, guiding the company through successful clinical advancements in kidney disease therapies before its acquisition by Novartis in 2023 for $3.5 billion. His earlier career included key executive positions at Relypsa, Inc., where he led medical affairs and contributed to the FDA approval of Veltassa for hyperkalemia, culminating in its acquisition by Vifor Pharma; and at Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical Inc., where he oversaw global medical affairs during the launches of multiple rare disease therapies. Dr. Shukla's track record includes driving multiple product approvals, strategic partnerships, and high-value acquisitions, demonstrating his ability to advance innovative therapies from discovery to commercialization. At aTyr Pharma, Dr. Shukla leads the company's efforts to advance efzofitimod, a first-in-class biologic immunomodulator, through Phase 3 clinical trials for pulmonary sarcoidosis and into other inflammatory indications. Under his leadership, aTyr has strengthened its pipeline, secured significant funding, and forged key collaborations, positioning the company for transformative growth in addressing unmet needs in rare pulmonary diseases. His strategic vision and deep scientific acumen continue to propel aTyr toward delivering novel treatments to patients worldwide.
